  • Chest expands: The ribs and diaphragm contract, expanding the chest cavity.
  • Diaphragm contracts: The diaphragm, a dome-shaped muscle below the lungs, flattens downward.
  • Negative pressure: This expansion creates a negative pressure in the chest cavity.
  • Air flows in: Air is drawn through the nose or mouth, down the trachea, and into the lungs.

Exhalation (Breathing Out)

  • Chest contracts: The ribs and diaphragm relax, causing the chest cavity to contract.
  • Lung: The lungs are compressed, forcing air out.
  • Diaphragm relaxes: The diaphragm returns to its dome shape.
  • Air flows out: Air is expelled through the trachea, nose, or mouth.
